Caribbean maritime leaders call for cross-sector action to decarbonize shipping

GMN II’s implementing partner MTCC Caribbean has facilitated a regional roundtable in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on 29-30 January with both IMO’s projects GreenVoyage2050 and the Global MTCC Network (GMN Phase II) under the theme “Unlocking maritime decarbonisation”.

This event was an important step in supporting Caribbean States to turn global maritime decarbonisation goals into concrete regional action. Convening senior policymakers, port and energy authorities and financiers, the roundtable led to the development of draft policy recommendations on regional coordination, knowledge-sharing, capacity building and investment facilitation.

This shifted the conversation from analysis to implementation, including how to align maritime policy, infrastructure planning, energy systems and financing needs in the region. Discussions included interactive exercises to map initiatives, gaps and opportunities, helping countries identify priorities for the Caribbean.

The event supported SIDS and LDCs to understand opportunities and challenges of the green transition, and helped shape the future of low- and zero-carbon maritime projects.
