MTCCS Overview

Established in 2017 under the GMN Phase I project, the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTCCs) are located in key developing regions: Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and Pacific. GMN II is structured around MTCCs, each hosted by a prominent local institution and serves as a centre of excellence and innovation for sustainable maritime practices within its region. These centres work collaboratively with the IMO, regional governments, industry stakeholders, and international organizations to build capacities, run pilot projects, and foster public-private partnerships aimed at decarbonizing the maritime sector.

Each MTCC, in collaboration with regional and global partners, plays a critical role in advancing sustainable practices and reducing emissions within the maritime sector. By acting as regional hubs of innovation, the MTCCs facilitate the introduction and scaling of green maritime technologies. They support local stakeholders by providing technical assistance, offering training, and running pilot projects tailored to regional needs. These centres also foster strong partnerships between governments, the private sector, and international organizations to drive the adoption of low-carbon solutions across the maritime industry. Their efforts are crucial in helping developing countries meet international climate goals and in advancing the global transition toward a decarbonized shipping sector.
