Strengthened Capacities of Women’s Regional Organisations
Gender Component
The GMN II Project is committed to advancing gender equality and promoting the meaningful participation of women in the maritime sector, aligning with the principles of SDG 5 (Gender Equality). Recognizing the vital role of women in driving sustainable maritime development, the project adopts a comprehensive approach that includes awareness campaigns, data collection, and capacity-building initiatives, all emphasizing gender-focused action.

1. Developing Gender-Focused Action Plans
As a foundational deliverable, Gender Action Plans will be developed in the first year of Phase II. These plans will:
• Promote women’s participation in the shipping sector through targeted activities.
• Strengthen women’s capacities in technical, operational, and policy-making roles, particularly in the application of maritime technologies.
• Foster formal collaboration with Women’s Regional Maritime Networks, such as WIMAC, WOMESA, and PACWIMA, to ensure sustainable and impactful gender-focused initiatives.
This structured framework will guide all subsequent gender-related activities, ensuring alignment with the project’s overarching goals.

2. Promoting Awareness and Visibility for Women in Maritime
To enhance the representation and visibility of women in the maritime sector, the project will:
• Integrate dedicated sessions into Project events to discuss challenges and opportunities for women in maritime, with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainable shipping practices.
• Provide platforms for showcasing women’s contributions to the sector, encouraging their active participation in leadership, technical, and operational roles.
• Address barriers to women's engagement in the maritime industry, creating inclusive opportunities for development and recognition.

3. Data-Driven Gender Insights
An evidence-based approach underpins the GMN II Project’s gender initiatives. To achieve this:
• Sex, age, disability, and nationality-disaggregated data will be collected and analyzed for all project events, training sessions, and MTCC staff compositions.
• A baseline will be established in the second year, with progress monitored and reported in quarterly, annual, and final reports.
• Findings will be shared with the EU, IMO, and regional and international partners, informing gender policy development and fostering best practices across the maritime sector.
This systematic data collection ensures that project outcomes are measurable, transparent, and impactful.
