MTCC Latin America’s First Online Regional Workshop “Leading the Sustainable Maritime Transition of Latin America toward 2026”
Type of Activity: Regional Workshop
When: Wednesday, 10 December 2025
MTCC Latin America have hosted their First Virtual Regional Workshop under the GMN II – Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres Network Project, Phase 2.
The Workshop focused on advancing a sustainable and inclusive maritime transition in Latin America, with particular attention to decarbonisation, innovation and gender equality.
The event promoted regional cooperation and knowledge exchange on the topic of decarbonisation, facilitate dialogue on alternative fuels, energy efficiency and port decarbonisation pathways. It also set the focus on strengthening institutional and technical capacities across participating countries, encourage public-private collaboration to accelerate the maritime energy transition and integrate gender equality considerations into maritime decarbonisation strategies.
The Workshop featured technical presentations and panel discussions structured around several strategic points:
- the sustainable maritime transition and regional perspectives towards 2026
- maritime safety and security in the context of sectoral modernisation and digitalisation
- technological innovation to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions
- regional cooperation and strategic partnerships among government, industry and academia
- synergies between sustainability, competitiveness and resilience in maritime transport.
The main achievements of the virtual regional workshop were the strengthening of regional cooperation through a coordinated approach among Latin American countries for a sustainable maritime transition, including identification of common challenges and regional opportunities for implementing technical, operational and technological measures focused on energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction. The engagement of various stakeholders, including authorities, the private sector, academia and international organisations also formed a core reason of the Workshop’s multilateral impact. Inclusive participation was achieved by ensuring gender equality was considered in all technical discussions.
