MTCC Caribbean’s National Workshop “Progressing Maritime Decarbonisation in St. Kitts and Nevis”

MTCC Caribbean, under its mandate as an implementing partner of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and European Union (EU) Global MTCC Network (GMN) Phase II Project, convened its first 2026 National Workshop, titled “Progressing Maritime Decarbonisation in St. Kitts and Nevis,” from 4 to 5 February 2026.

Building on outcomes from the regional workshop held in 2025, the two-day event focused on advancing maritime decarbonisation technologies, financing mechanisms, and gender empowerment to foster a cleaner, more inclusive Caribbean maritime sector. Through expert presentations, panel discussions, and working sessions, stakeholders translated regional insights into country-specific actions aimed at accelerating implementation and pilot project development.

Key achievements included:

• Alignment of the GMN Phase II project objectives with St. Kitts and Nevis’ national energy transition priorities.
• Strengthened understanding of the IMO 2023 GHG Strategy and its implications for the maritime and port sectors.
• Identification of priority decarbonisation actions and financing pathways for technology deployment and capacity building.
• Concrete steps to advance gender equality (SDG 5) through training, mentorship, and policy support for women in maritime.
• Reinforced commitment to regional collaboration, including support for mechanisms such as a Regional Industry Alliance to coordinate efforts and mobilise resources.

Complementing the workshop, MTCC Caribbean also installed two wind monitoring systems at Basseterre Port under the GMN Phase II pilot project, in partnership with the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA). This technical activity supports data collection for a proposed wind-powered microgrid, demonstrating the project’s transition from policy dialogue to practical implementation
