MTCC Latin America’s National Workshop “Advancing Maritime Decarbonization in Mexico: Energy Efficiency, Technology and Innovation for a Sustainable Transition”

MTCC Latin America, under the Global MTCC Network (GMN) Project Phase II, successfully held the First National Workshop 2026 in la Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, on 7-8 April 2026. The GMN II project is implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and funded by the European Union (EU). The event was held by MTCC Latin America in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Navy of the United Mexican States (SEMAR) through the National Maritime Authority Unit (UNAMAN), and with the support of Baja Ferries.

The workshop convened stakeholders from government, academia, industry, financial institutions, research bodies and international organisations, and discussions focused on energy efficiency measures, alternative fuels, digitalisation, emissions monitoring, and regional cooperation in Latin America, with key achievements including:

• Advancement of national cooperation through agreement to develop a Maritime Decarbonisation Roadmap for Mexico towards 2050, including discussions on main challenges and the identification of priorities and solutions.
• Initial concepts for green port pilot projects were presented and discussed in support of Mexico’s energy transition.
• Reinforcement of the importance of gender equality in maritime energy efficiency initiatives.
• Engagement with financial stakeholders to lay the groundwork for bankable proposals to support maritime energy efficiency and sustainability projects.

Furthermore, the event included the launch of the GMN II AI-driven pilot project focused on fuel optimisation and operational performance management for a RoPax ferry in Mexico.
