MTCC Latin America’s National Workshop “Advancing Maritime Sustainability in Ecuador: Energy Transition, Technology and Innovation for an Efficient and Future-Ready Maritime Sector”

MTCC Latin America, under the Global MTCC Network (GMN) Project Phase II, successfully held the Second National Workshop 2026 in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on 9-10 July 2026. The GMN Phase II Project is implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and funded by the European Union (EU) through the Global Gateway initiative.

Entitled “Advancing Maritime Sustainability in Ecuador: Energy Transition, Technology and Innovation for an Efficient and Future-Ready Maritime Sector,” the event was delivered by MTCC Latin America, with the International Maritime University of Panama (UMIP), in collaboration with the National Directorate of Aquatic Spaces (DIRNEA) of the Ecuadorian Navy.

The workshop convened 45 participants from government, maritime and port administrations, shipping companies, academia, the logistics and shipbuilding sectors, shipowners, research institutions, financial stakeholders and international organisations. With a nearly balanced gender distribution – 51% men and 49% women – the workshop also highlighted the importance of inclusive participation in maritime decarbonisation initiatives.

Discussions focused on national maritime decarbonisation strategies; energy-efficiency measures; sustainable alternative marine fuels; digitalisation and emissions-monitoring tools; technological innovation; access to finance; and cooperation among government, industry, academia and international partners. Key outcomes included:

• Strengthened national dialogue on the challenges, opportunities and priorities for reducing GHG emissions from Ecuador’s maritime and port sectors.

• Exchange of experiences and technical knowledge on energy efficiency, alternative fuels and digital solutions to support the maritime energy transition.

• Increased engagement among public-sector institutions, industry, academia, financial institutions and international organisations to advance coordinated action.

• Confirmed interest in the Regional Industry Alliance for Latin America (RIALA), reinforcing the value of regional cooperation in accelerating maritime decarbonisation.

• Reinforcement of the importance of gender equality and inclusive participation in maritime energy-efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives.

The workshop reaffirmed the commitment of Ecuadorian stakeholders to strengthen national capacities, develop strategic partnerships and support the transition towards a safer, more efficient, resilient and sustainable maritime sector.
